Little Nicky Synopsis Every 10,000 years, Hell's ruler steps down and hands his throne over to one of his sons. The incumbent Devil decides to stay in office, though, for another "term." His sons Adrian and Cassius covet the throne, while their meek younger brother, Nicky, just wants to love his dad. Adrian and Cassius leave Hell in revolt, which freezes the gates of Hell and causes the Devil to begin wasting away. Only Nicky can save the Devil by tricking Adrian and Cassius into drinking from a magic flask that will bring them back to Hell. Little Nicky travels to New York and enlists a talking dog, two head-banging burnouts, and a mousy art student, to help him battle his brothers and learn the ropes of the physical world.
The Message I like Adam Sandler. He's funny and generally plays nice-guy underdogs who overcome huge odds. That said, I must label Little Nicky as one of the worst movies I've seen (I'm only doing it because the youth didn't think there could be a message in it.) Why is it so bad? I laughed more in Schindler's List than in this mess. ("Rib-tickling" scenes include the talking dog shooting a missile out of his privates to save Nicky.) There's nothing redeeming here other than the fact that Little Nicky acknowledges the existence of Heaven and Hell. However, while Hell is represented as a place of punishment and despair, the inhabitants of Heaven are depicted as shallow and self-absorbed, and all the women resemble Victoria's Secret models. Even die-hard Adam Sandler fans will agree that Little Nicky is a waste of time and money.
Theme: Good Wins Over Evil. Discussion Questions: What have you heard about in the news recently that exemplifies evil? Why do you think God lets these things happen? Do you think we as Christians have the ability to help overcome evil? Why or why not? Do you think that Jesus came to rescue us from the world or to free the world? Read aloud 1 John 4:2-6. 1Jo 4:2 By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit which confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God, 1Jo 4:3 and every spirit which does not confess Jesus is not of God. This is the spirit of antichrist, of which you heard that it was coming, and now it is in the world already. 1Jo 4:4 Little children, you are of God, and have overcome them; for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. 1Jo 4:5 They are of the world, therefore what they say is of the world, and the world listens to them. 1Jo 4:6 We are of God. Whoever knows God listens to us, and he who is not of God does not listen to us. By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error. How can God's Spirit within us help us to overcome evil? What things in our lives can prevent Jesus from being able to work through us? What are some "evil" battles raging around you and how can you help fight them? |
