Meet The Fockers

Synopsis

Greg Focker is a male nurse who's hoping to set a wedding date with his pregnant girlfriend Pam Byrnes. Having survived a meeting with her parents -- Jack and Dina -- where it was revealed that her dad was not a florist but rather a retired CIA agent -- the time is now set for all of them to meet his parents.

With Jack's grandson, Little Jack, in tow, the foursome drives down to Florida in Jack's new RV. There, they meet Greg's father, Bernie, a former lawyer turned stay-at-home dad who firmly believes in touchy-feely emotional connections, and his sex therapist wife, Roz.

With the sets of parents falling on the polar opposite sides of most every spectrum, the stage is set for comedic strife, especially as everyone tries to keep Pam's pregnancy secret from Jack. Things become more complicated when the former agent learns that Greg lost his virginity to his saucy, former nanny Isabel and sees that her young son, Jorge, bears a striking resemblance to Greg. Jack then sets out to prove he's Greg's illegitimate son in hopes that such news might make Pam change her mind about marriage.

The Message

Jack asks Greg what's truly important in life, and Greg responds, "love&ldots; friendship." Jack says leaving a legacy is the most important. He needs to be certain that Greg's parents, his lineage, won't create a "chink in the chain" for his future grandchildren.

While leaving a legacy isn't the most important thing in life, it is something to think about. Far too many people worry about their legacy late in life. As Christians, we should be seeking to impact our world for the better throughout our lives. By living righteously now, we create a spiritual legacy that lasts for eternity.

Scriptures

Live Righteously

1Pe 3:8 Finally, all of you, have unity of spirit, sympathy, love of the brethren, a tender heart and a humble mind.

1Pe 3:9 Do not return evil for evil or reviling for reviling; but on the contrary bless, for to this you have been called, that you may obtain a blessing.

1Pe 3:10 For "He that would love life and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking guile;

1Pe 3:11 let him turn away from evil and do right; let him seek peace and pursue it.

1Pe 3:12 For the eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer. But the face of the Lord is against those that do evil."

1Pe 3:13 Now who is there to harm you if you are zealous for what is right?

Discussion Questions:

Who are some people in history you think have good legacies? What did they do to earn their legacy?

Why do older people worry so much about their "legacy"? Do you think they'd worry about it if they'd lived with integrity throughout their lives? Why or why not?

If you could write out your legacy right now, what would it be? Are you doing anything to build that legacy now? Why or why not?

Refer to 1 Peter 3:8-13. What recipe does Peter give for building a solid legacy? Why is it important to start living out these things now while you're young?

Which of Peter's instructions do you find difficult to live out? How can we help you get better in this area?

What legacy should a Christian try to leave behind? What one thing can you start doing that will move you toward a powerful legacy?

Other Topics for discussion

Profanity

Message: Greg tries to calm Little Jack by showing him several different toys. He starts making up a song with a stuffed animal, flippantly ending the verse with "a**hole." To Greg's horror, Little Jack immediately begins repeating the dirty word. This clip may be funny, but it points to a huge problem in our culture-rampant profanity. Once relegated to pool halls and locker rooms, people don't even blush today when spouting blue language in public. Stem the rising tide of dirty words by pointing to God's call for his people to stand apart from the world with pure deeds and speech.

Discussion Questions:

Do you use any words that you'd be embarrassed for your grandmother to hear you say? Is it okay to say these things when she's not around? Why or why not?

What reasons do people have for using profanity? When do you find it easy to let some profanity slip out?

What do you typically think of a person who swears a lot?

Read aloud Ephesians 5:3-4.

But fornication and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is fitting among saints. Let there be no filthiness, nor silly talk, nor levity, which are not fitting; but instead let there be thanksgiving.

Do you think cussing is a sin? Why or why not? Is it possible to glorify God by using profanity? Explain.

How would not using profanity make a person stand out in your school? What makes it difficult to stop using profanity? How can you learn to maintain a pure tongue?

God's Favor

Message: Everything goes perfectly for Greg and Pam, as if God is smiling upon them as every streetlight turns green and they get bumped up to First Class. Unfortunately, many people (even Christians) judge God's favor based upon what's occurring on the outside. Though God does promise blessings to his children, storms of life don't automatically indicate a person is "living in sinful rebellion." God doesn't reward and punish with every triumph or setback. Remember that you still retain God's favor no matter what your external circumstances might be.

Discussion Questions:

Does good luck mean a person has God's favor? Why or why not?

Who are some righteous people in the Bible who suffered terrible hardships? Did these hardships occur because the people were outside of God's favor? Why or why not?

What's the connection between our external circumstances and our relationship with God? Explain.

Read aloud Ecclesiastes 8:12.

Though a sinner does evil a hundred times and prolongs his life, yet I know that it will be well with those who fear God, because they fear before him;

Why do the wicked sometimes appear to prosper and the righteous suffer? Why doesn't God show his favor more tangibly?

When does a person have God's favor? Why doesn't God always reward those he loves with material blessings or "good luck?"

How does someone know if they have God's favor in the midst of hard times? How can a person learn to hold on to this faith despite external hardships?

OUR WORD TO THE WISE

The following is a brief summary of the content found in this comedy that's been rated PG-13. Profanity consists of at least 7 "s" words while other expletives and colorful phrases are uttered. Sexually related dialogue about various topics is

present, as is all sorts of sexually related material and behavior. Various buxom women show cleavage. Various instances of crude humor are present. Violence involves some physical accidents, a stun-gun, and a rough, backyard football tackle. Other potentially imitative behavior is also present.

BLOOD/GORE

Jack makes a baby sign language hand gesture for "pooping" and states that Little Jack will be enjoying a nice poop later. We also see a flash card drawing depicting a young kid sitting on a toilet (no nudity).

Little Jack accidentally head-butts Greg, bloodying his nose.

Greg unknowingly drinks some of a woman's pumped breast milk (some viewers might find that gross).

Little Jack audibly farts.

Jack's cat flushes the Fockers' dog down the RV's toilet. Bernie then uses a fire extinguisher to break the toilet and retrieve the dog, sending the blue cleaning fluid inside spraying everywhere. We later see the dog whose fur is now blue (but he's otherwise okay).

As Jack finishes in the shower (no nudity), he opens the curtain to find Bernie sitting on the toilet with his pants around his ankles. There's some small talk and Jack is uncomfortable with this, with Bernie stating that he's almost done.

There's brief talk about Little Jack eating his own boogers.

Jack suddenly jabs a syringe filled with sodium pentothal into Greg's neck (seen rather graphically, but without any blood), to make him speak the truth.

While preparing to use some martial arts on Jack, Bernie accidentally kicks Greg in the face, slightly bloodying it.

PROFANITY

As in the first film, there are many uses of the family's last name, "Focker," that are made to sound like various uses of the "f" word. Beyond that, there are at least 7 "s" words, 1 slang term for male genitals ("winky dink"), 8 for breasts ("boobs" and "knockers"), 12 asses (10 used with "hole" and mostly said by a toddler -- for laughs on the part of the film), 3 hells, 2 craps, 8 uses of "Oh my God," 2 of "Jesus" and 1 use each of "G-damn," "God," "My God" and "Oh God."

SEX/NUDITY

We see Greg in between a pregnant woman's spread legs in the hospital. He then holds up his gloved hand with his index and middle finger together and looking moist/lubricated.

A roadside billboard shows a very buxom woman showing cleavage, and it draws the attention of Little Jack (who sees it as food).

A young female bus driver tries to get Jack to blow the horn on his RV. Greg finally gets him to do that, but we then see a sign on the

passing bus that reads, "Honk if you're horny." Some young women then go to flash their breasts at Greg and Jack by lifting their shirts, but the camera cuts back just to show us the men's reaction. When the camera cuts back to the bus, we briefly see a person's bare butt as they moon the men.

Jack walks out wearing a modified bra that sports a realistic looking bare breast (that he says was modeled after Little Jack's mother's real one). He does so to prevent any separation and/or routine disruption issues. Jack is proud of this invention and wants Greg to feel it.

Bernie proudly states that he conceived Greg with just one testicle, adding that the other did not drop.

The Fockers dog humps Dina's leg, with Bernie telling her not to worry since "the pink part didn't get on you."

We see various nude statues, busts and figurines in the Fockers' house that show nudity (bare breasts, butts, pubic hair and exaggerated phallic images).

We see some older participants in Greg's class where the old man is back behind an older woman's rear (both are fully clothed). He then lies down on a bed and does some pelvic thrusting into the air before the older woman straddles and starts to gyrate on him.

Roz asks Greg if Pam still climaxes regularly (which makes Greg uncomfortable).

Roz states that at least Bernie has the libido of a teenager and he jokes that he gave her a "little matinee" that afternoon.

We hear that Greg had a childhood crush on Isabel, his saucy/sexy nanny (who's there now and sports a lot of cleavage while stating that she "had the boob job"). Little Jack spots her cleavage and does all sorts of gesturing and tongue wagging (in relation to wanting to be fed).

Roz has Dina looking through an old family album where they find Greg's circumcised foreskin (that ends up landing in a fondue pot).

Greg hears his parents loudly doing some sexual role playing from their bedroom. Greg ends up in their room where he sees his dad with whipped cream all over his face and a lot in Roz's ample and quite visible cleavage.

Roz finds a dress for Dina and says that it will get Jack's blood flowing. She then asks Dina, "How's your sex life?" Dina is flustered, but then admits that they only have sex on their anniversary.

Roz gives Jack a massage where he lies shirtless on a massage table and she rubs his back and then runs her hands down under his belly. After doing that a few times, she says, "Oops, hit some driftwood" (an erection joke).

While under the effects of sodium pentothal, Greg addresses a party and says that he still masturbates to Pam. He then tells everyone to look at her "boobs" and that he wants to lather them up.

After Roz gives Jack sexual advice about Dina, Bernie states, "You Fockerized him." He then says to her, "I'd like to Fockerize you." We then see Jack and Dina hurrying to their RV, presumably to have sex.

VIOLENCE

Little Jack accidentally head-butts Greg, bloodying his nose.

Determined to stand up to Jack while playing backyard football, Bernie races toward Jack, tackling him hard and flipping him through the air and to the ground, throwing out Jack's back.

Jack suddenly jabs a syringe filled with sodium pentothal into Greg's neck.

Played for comedy, Bernie falls backwards over a table while dancing.

While under the effects of sodium pentothal, Greg passes out and falls backwards to the floor (played for laughs). While preparing to use some martial arts on Jack, Bernie accidentally kicks Greg in the face, slightly bloodying it.

After pulling them over for speeding and Bernie getting out to discuss what's occurred, a cop pushes Bernie down hard to the trunk while cuffing him. He then twists Greg's wrist, causing him pain before likewise slamming him to the trunk. When Greg tries to run off, the cop zaps him with a taser and keeps on shocking him for a while (played for laughs) while holding his real gun on Bernie. Jack then arrives on the scene, and tries to intervene, but the cop zaps him with that taser.
