One For All

Work Zone and High Way

Set Up: Tonight's lesson is only in the Youth & Activity Centers and made up of challenges. The first challenge is temptation. We have given up tables and chairs for Lent and they will be everywhere and available tonight. The Youth should not give in and should eat on the floor.

Introduce the session: Tonight's lesson is titled "One For All".

Ask: What do you think the title of this lesson means?

(Only get a few answers.)

Which Way Are You Moving?

Work Zone & High Way

Together

Say: As the people of God, we are called to bear one another's burdens, to help one another. We give and receive support at many levels: physically, emotionally, morally, and financially. Supporting one another is an important part of what it means to be "the body of Christ."

Read: Ephesians 4:1-7 (One body, one Spirit)

I therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, making every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling, one Lord, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all. But each of us was given grace according to the measure of Christ's gift.

Moving In

Work Zone & High Way

Say: Everyone has 24 hours in a day, yet some people seem to get a whole lot done with those hours, while others barely get off the couch. One of the biblical principles to security and godliness is that of productivity. You are beginning the practices that will become habits of your lifetime. This lesson is designed to help you learn to not waste your time or the time of others.

An Example, Say: I COULD GET ALL A'S IN SCHOOL. Ask them to go to one end of the room if they agree with the statement, and the other end of the room if they disagree. Next, add to the statement by adding IF I GOT $50 FOR EACH A I BROUGHT HOME. See how many move to the agree side. Keep upping the money amount until all of the students agree with your statement, or until you are offering $100,000 for each A. Point out that if the motivation is high enough, almost everyone will figure out a way to get straight A's. The thing that keeps many of us from doing what we're capable of is our own laziness.

2nd Challenge: Walk the Body - Trust

Set Up: Groups must have two spotters, ready to assist and keep everyone from danger.

Individual volunteers fall backwards as the group catches them and swings them up so that the group is supporting the person parallel to the ground. (Falling back and being caught is easier than trying to lift someone off the ground.)

Then the group is to walk forward carefully as directed and back, with the person in this position. Then they gently let the person back down to the ground. Repeat the challenge with as many group members as want to volunteer.

3rd Challenge: Floating Ladder - Teamwork

Set up: Each team must have at least two spotters, ready to assist and keep everyone from danger.

Make as many smaller groups as needed. Have members of the group hold three boards in ascending order (like a ladder). Have a volunteer climb the ladder up, over and down an obstacle. The board holders may only move when the climber is not on the board. By moving from the back of the line the board holders can create a new step in front of the climber. The climber must go up then down. The steps can be close or far apart, and the ladder can be as long or short as the group desires. Repeat the challenge with all of the members who want to climb.

4th Challenge: Patience & Fairness

Divide into ten teams. Each team will have to solve a clue and choose one member to go and hunt the "treasure." After your team decides where to look, they must report to Kris and tell him where they are going. The catch, the whole group must decide who goes next one at a time.

Mat 10:38

And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me.

This one can really trip you up, so keep your eyes to the floor.

It's in a long, long hall, you needn't pause at the door.

If you've come right along and you're tired of this rhyme,

Don't grow up to quickly, Like the rest, you will find.

Num 30:3

If a woman also vow a vow unto the LORD, and bind herself by a bond, [being] in her father's house in her youth;

Act 1:13

And when they were come in, they went up into an upper room, where abode both Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartholomew, and Matthew, James [the son] of Alphaeus, and Simon Zelotes, and Judas [the brother] of James.

One more word before you go, Discard every other; it's easier, you know.

Then solve the clue scrambled below.

The very first word above you'll find below.

When you reach it the treasure you'll know.

Super 8's

Divide into any group of eight and find completely different areas for the following discussion.

Read aloud the following Scripture.

Galatians 6:1-5 My friends, if anyone is detected in a transgression, you who have received the Spirit should restore such care that you yourselves are not tempted. Bear one another's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. For if those who are nothing think they are something, they deceive themselves. All must test their own work, rather than their neighbor's work, will become a cause for pride. For all must carry their own loads

Ask:

What point is made in this passage?

What does this point have to do with the four challenges we just did?

What does "bear one another's burdens" mean?

How can we do that in real life?

How can we do that within our own group?

What kinds of burdens do we have?

How can we give support in these areas?

When we do this for one another how are we affected?

    How would you define laziness?

Can we help each other with laziness?

Say: What is the right number of hours in a day for a person to be involved in the following activities? Keep in mind there are only 24 hours in a day! Discuss the number of hours the youth feel is appropriate for each activity and place a check mark by the ones they think are wasteful if done too much.

__  __ Sleeping

__  __ Being involved in sports or play

__  __ Watching television

__  __ Reading

__  __ Talking on the phone

__  __ Playing video games

__  __ Thinking

__  __ Listening to music

__  __ Hanging out with friends

__  __ Being involved in school or studies

__  __ Doing devotions

__  __ Surfing the Internet

__  __ Talking to parents

__  __ Eating

__  __ Putting on makeup

__  __ Shopping

__  __ Doing chores or going to work

Say: Be wise stewards of your time, talents and energy. You only have one lifetime- why waste it? Lift each other up with devotion, trust, teamwork, patience & fairness. While television and video games may be fun, they can devour hours and even days of your lives with little practical return. Pay your dues in hard work for anything-from respecting each other to getting good grades-rather than thinking you will magically get the rewards for those things in the future.

Closing

Work Zone & High Way

Ask: What did you learn tonight?

Your challenge this week is to be the body of Christ. Act as one for the good of all. Do what Luke 6:38 says: give, and it will be given to you; good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For the measure you give will be the measure you get back."

Prayer

Invite the youth to join hands and offer a few words of prayer if they want. The leader starts the prayer, then squeezes the hand of the person to the left to indicate their turn, if they do not wish to speak just pass the squeeze and so on, until the squeeze gets back to the first person.
