How do You See it?

It's Your Move

Work Zone and High Way Groups

All gather in the center of the gym, welcome, and introduction of guests, make announcements.

For Sponsors: Which way are we moving?

1. Reach across boundaries to make new friends.

2. Discover the needs of people of other cultures.

3. Commit to carry God's love to people everywhere.

Which Way Are We Moving

Work Zone & High Way

Find a volunteer to tell briefly their own version of the story about Jonah.

Jonah 1:1-2:1a and 2:10-3:10

Continue: Jonah refused God's request to reach out to a different culture. Jonah was a well-known prophet during his time. Assyria was known for ruthlessness and cruelty. The Israelites and Jonah hated them because of their actions. So when God told Jonah to reach out to Nineveh, the capital of Assyria, he tried to run away from God's command.

The prospect of reaching out to someone who's different can be scary. But God cares for all of us.

Tonight I hope you all will be able to carry God's message of love to others just a Jonah finally did.

Game: Invasion

Form four teams of citizens. Have each team come up with a name for their country. Establish four countries, one on each side of the room, and have the citizens move to their countries.

When teams are ready, shout "Invade (country's name)!" and have all the kids race into that country. The last two persons to invade the country are out and must return to their country and sit down for the rest of the game. Try to confuse kids by yelling the name of one country and pointing to another. After each round have the citizens all return to their own country. After four to six rounds the country with the most citizens standing wins.

Ask:

· How did it feel as you raced to the various countries?

· How is the competition of this game like the way people from different countries compete with each other?

Say: We've been pretending to overtake other countries in this game. However, most people don't move to new countries to invade them. Rather, they hope to make new friends there. Let's see what happens when we cross borders to make new friends.

Game: Pit Invasion

Form four teams of citizens. Have each team come up with a name for one of the four couches in the PIT. The couch is their country. Start with everyone standing in the floor area of the pit.

When teams are ready, shout "Invade (couches name)!" and have the youth race to that country. Anyone not able to sit on the couch in some way is out and is banished to the graffiti wall to stand in exile the rest of the game. Try to confuse kids by yelling the name of one country (couch) and pointing to another. After each round it is not necessary for the citizens to move from the couch until another one is called. After four rounds

say "the last two to invade are exiled!" Continue until only three of four youth remain.

Call everyone back together then Ask:

· How did it feel when you raced to various countries?

· Is our invasion of another countries couch justified?

· What would be a good reason to want someone else's couch?

· How does this exercise compare to what's going on right now over seas?

Let the discussion rumble for a while.

Game: Pull-A-Pal

Form two teams and have them face each other across a line on the floor. The line should be no longer than the teams need to face each other at the beginning. Tell the youth you're going to play a game similar to tug of war. But the object of the game is for each person to try to pull individuals from the opposing team across the line. Once a player is pulled across the line, he or she must switch teams and start helping the new team win. All players must stand with one foot on the line or have a hand on someone with a foot on the line. Remind youth not to be too rough. Play until everyone is on one team.

Ask:

· What did you lake most about the game?

· What did you like least?

· How did you fell when you were pulled to the other side?

· How is this game like what's going on over seas right now? Allow discussion.

Say: Making friends with people who are different is a lot like playing this game. At first we are divided on opposing sides. Eventually we should try to see what we have to offer each other, even if the other has nothing for us in return.

The Spin

Needed: Six volunteers, two blindfolds

There are two sides to every argument. This experiment should give the youth an idea what it's like to live in a war torn country. Assign your volunteers as follows:

President of the U.S.

U.S. Reporter

Dictator Sadamskivich

Al-Revered Reporter

2 Confused citizens

Bring the President, dictator and the reporters together. Have the citizens go to another room. Tell the four "Great Communicators" that they must guide both citizens to their country (any two different spots designated by the sponsors) by verbal commands only. They are competing against each other to win the citizens. Have then take turns, one after the other trying to give one instruction each. Tell the citizens they must attempt to get home and that their instructions will only come verbally but one of the instructors will attempt to mislead them about directions home. The citizens may not communicate to the instructors in any way. Play for a while.

Ask:

· What was happening?

· Explain how this is like the current event of today.

· How can we know who to believe?

How's Yours?

Say: Figuring it all out is difficult sometimes. The instructions we receive may be correct but the meaning may still be a little bit fuzzy. Let's play a game that deals with communication and the art of figuring it out.

One member of the group is sent from the room.  The rest of the group decides on one part of the body.  The person is called back into the room and tries to identify the body part chosen by asking individual group members.  "How's Yours?"

The group member chosen has to respond in a descriptive word or short phrase that describes the part chosen.  If a group member's description allows the person to guess the body part, that group member becomes "it."

Moving out

High Way

Challenge the youth to determine the pros and cons of moving to another country or state. Have them discuss what it would take to make them want to move and how it would be to adapt to another country or state.

What would the basic requirements be?

After the basics then what?

Is religion part of the basics?

Watch the time.

Prayer and Concerns

Work Zone & High Way

Say: Figuring it all out is difficult sometimes. The instructions we receive may be correct but the meaning may still be a little bit fuzzy. If we keep trying, pretty soon we will get to the bottom of it and then be able to make a good choice. Keep coming to Youth, keep seeking the answers, go to church, and listen to those that offer guidance. Welcome others by doing all the good you can whenever you can for whoever you can.

Gather in the closing circle. Ask if anyone has a closing comment they would like to make?

Pray!

Join hands, right over left, and say the UMYF benediction.
