Goodbye Summer Lock-in

7:00 – 9:ish Open Gym

Family Life Center only!  Just hang out in the gym until just about everyone arrives, and wait for the fun to begin!

9:ish-9:30 Lock-in Expectations and Limitations

Your Limitations are as follows:

Do not leave the Church

If the area you are in is not climate controlled you are outside the church.

No “extra curricular” activities permitted

For example, no sucking face with anyone

No balloon blowing

No cheating

If you are looking for a way around a rule, you are probably about to cheat and had best not attempt any deviations until you reach saint hood.

Snacks and drinks are allowed in the Youth Center and the Gym only.

If you are in transit between these two locations you may not eat or drink.

Do not open locked doors

If you have to do anything to a door that is more than just gently opening it, you are probably attempting to open a locked door.

Stay out of the rafters

If you have to climb to get where you want to go and then you feel yourself having to balance on a beam high above the floor, chances are you are in the rafters.

Sleep only in designated sleeping rooms.

No hiding, food or drink in designated sleeping rooms

Expectations are as follows:

Participate as you can

Respect others

Listen

Clean up after your self

If you would rather sit out or go to sleep, let me know where you are going and what you are doing.

If you want an extra door unlocked

Take the bounce challenge

The leader may randomly unlock a door from time to time.

Don’t beg for a door to be opened unless you have passed the bounce challenge.

Have a Blast

9:30-10:30 To Tell the Truth

An easy TV game show game to get things going.

Play like a TV game show. For each round, get four contestants. Have them share a funny/interesting story that happened to them when they were young that they can say in one sentence. (e.g. My name is Billy and when I was 5, I was walking with my mom and a big guy ran by and grabbed my mom's purse!) If that is the story that sounds the best have all 4 contestants use their real name and say the same story. (e.g. My name is Teresa and when I was 5, I was walking with my mom and a big guy ran by and grabbed my mom's purse!) All contestants will tell the audience the exact same thing as if it is their story- but only one of them is telling the truth. Open up the audience to question individual contestants (like an Oprah show) and three of the contestants will have to lie through their teeth. Then have the audience vote who is really telling the truth. Then have the real person step forward.

10:30-11:00 Free Time

Sponsors used the free time to discover one on one where we were seeing spiritual growth in our youth.

11:00-12:00 Under Ground Church Session 1

Our infamous Lock-in Game

Under Ground Church has been a tradition for the youth of West Heights for many years.  By mixing this exciting game of tag-hide-and-go-seek-sardines-in-the-dark, a memorable experience should take place and with any luck each time they play it, from here on, it will have a deeper meaning.

Materials: Pool Noodles

The Game

Players are; Underground Church, Followers, or Guards.

There is one “Church” (a group of three).  The church is given a set amount of time to go and hide.  The Church may become the Guards for the next round.

There are “Guards” (number depends on the size of the “Church”).  The Guards try to keep the church from growing.  If a Guard tags a follower the Guard and the follower must go to the jail.  To make it more interesting, have a random guard be a "close to conversion." If a Christian wants to get away from a guard, they may attempt to tell them about Jesus, and the guard can, if they so choose, look the other way and let them go. The follower must remain in jail until at least three others are caught.  After the third follower is caught and brought to jail the group of followers is free to leave the jail after the count of 50. Give each guard a pool noodle. If they whack you are caught.

The “Followers” try to find the Underground Church without being tagged by the Guards or giving away where the Church is.  If a Guard finds the Church the round is over.  If the Church has 7 members the church may move to a new hiding place.  Once the church reaches 20 the round is over and the UNDERGROUND CHURCH has survived!

12:00-12:30 Free Time

12:30 – 1:30 Gargoyles

Kind of like a Hunting/Freeze tag game.

This is kind of like a Capture the flag/Freeze tag game except a lot more fun. This game is great for lock-ins or all-nighters because it must be pitch dark outside. This must be played in a facility with a lot of rooms. First you should have more than 10 or 12 people to play. The more people, the more fun. Next, you need a standard flashlight with 4 parts to it: 2 batteries, the handle, and the light head. You must turn off all the lights in the church or facility except one room. This room is the one that you explain the game in. It can also be for the staff members and students that aren't playing to hang out in.

Assign 2 people to be the gargoyles. As you are explaining the rules and objectives, have a staff member hide the parts of the flashlight in obvious places that you would see in the light but not too easy in dark. Tell that staff member also to make sure all doors of rooms that kids may hide or go in are open. If they are shut, that is a sign that students may not go in there.

Let all the students, besides the gargoyles, loose to find the pieces to the flashlight. 3 minutes after you let the students go, let the gargoyles loose. When a gargoyle touches someone with a fu-noodle, they are frozen and must remain in the same spot they were tagged in. The only way a student can be unfrozen is if a person with a piece of the flashlight touches them. The objective for the gargoyles is to freeze everyone. The objective for the others is to find the flashlight pieces, put it together, and shine it on the gargoyles destroying them.

If the person with the "completed" flashlight gets tagged before he or she shines it on the gargoyles then the gargoyles win or if everyone is frozen then the gargoyles win. If the gargoyles are spotted by the flashlight then the others win.

If a person with a part gets tagged, he or she can't hand it off to another passerby- they have to wait until they are unfrozen. If someone with a part is getting chased and feels that they will be tagged they may roll the part to the side and tell other people by yelling, "There is a piece next to me, someone come get it!" Gargoyles may not touch the pieces. Frozen people may yell to everyone else to come and unfreeze them. They may not tell/yell where a gargoyle is.

To avoid cheating, assign 2 staff members or 2 trusty students to be "watchmen". They can take away watches with lights, laser lights, or any other source of light. They may warn people the first time, then kick people out of the game for running away after they are frozen.

 Session 2

3:00 – 4:00 Open Gym

Music, Food & Drinks

4:00-4:30 Guess What?

A simple situation acting game.

Get four volunteers or pick four people and have a sponsor take them back to a secluded room. have that sponsor tell them that they will go up in front of the crowd, one at a time. Each one will sit in a chair. The object is for them to act out a given scenario WITHOUT leaving the chair:

1. Pretend they are on a major roller coaster

2. Pretend they are riding a bull

3. Pretend they are being tortured

4. Pretend they are getting their shoulders rubbed and they like it a lot

Whoever does the best job - wins.

Meanwhile - the leader is in the other room telling the audience that the four people coming out are going to act out what they do when they are on the toilet. It's a hoot! People are crying everywhere from laughing so hard!! Let them go for about a minute or so and then tell them what they were really doing!

4:30-5:30 Under Ground Church

Session 3

5:30-6:00 Free Time

6:00-7:00 Chariot Races

Something like the name implies&ldots;

Divide youth into two teams. Each team gets a piece of rope and a furniture dolly. Each team lines up at the starting line. Two of the youth on each team are holding onto the front ends of the rope. One youth is sitting on the “scooter” and hanging on to the other end of the rope, soon to be hanging on for dear life. At the signal, the teams race around a designated course (a large oval works well), the two youth in front acting as horses pulling a chariot.

The race consists of three laps. At the end of each lap, the youth rotate, so one of the people riding now pulls, and one of the pullers now rides. Three laps allows each person to ride once and pull twice. If a rider is thrown from his chariot, the team must stop until the rider is firmly re-seated. Play as many rounds as each team has groups of three.
