Survivor

7:00 – 9:00 Open Gym and Music

9:00 – 9:30 Intro, Rules & Expectations

9:30 – 10:30 Bedlam

Divide into four tribes:

Udaman

Megachi

Yiddymach

Flipadonya

Each team takes one side of the playing field.  At the signal, each team attempts to move as quickly as possible to the side directly across from them, performing an announced activity as they go.  The first team to get all their member onto the new side wins that particular round and may pick 3 people from the opposite team to be out.

Announced activities can be walking backward, wheelbarrow (one wheelbarrow, two foot holders), piggyback, hopping on one foot, skipping.

In addition, each team will have 3 flags.  The tips of flags are tucked into pants or in pockets.  The flag must be showing at least 10 inches.  If an opposing team, winner or loser gets one of the flags they can pick 1 person per flag from the opposite team to be out.

10:30-12:30 Team Games

Stay divided into the 4 tribes Udaman, Megachi, Yiddymach, and Flipadonya. As one of two teams is scored on a new team comes in. Teams play to stay and play.

Pool Noodle Hockey

Ball Hockey always leaves the less than athletic people out of the game. In this version, take a pool noodle and cut about 1 inch of the end, cover it in duct tape. This is the puck. Because it’s so light, even the worst goalie can stop the shot. Also, it’s difficult to get a good 'slap shot' because the puck won't fly straight. Use pool noodles cut in half as the hockey sticks.

Steal-Stuff-From-People’s-Hula-Hoops

This game is active and hilarious. You’ll need one Hula Hoop and lots of ½ pool noodles. Place the hoops on the floor throughout a large area and place the noodles in the hoops.

Have kids stay in their 4 tribes and ask each team to choose one person to be a guard. Tell the teams that the object is to get as many noodles into their hoops as possible within a time limit (5 or 10 minutes). Players attempt to steal noodles from other teams’ hoops without getting tagged by the other teams’ guards.

Guards must keep one toe touching the floor inside their team’s hoop at all times without standing on the noodles. Tagged players must freeze and sit where they were tagged, first replacing any noodles in the hoops. Tagged players can be “unfrozen” by other players on their team.

A player who successfully steals a noodle takes it to their team’s hoop, where it can be stolen again by another team. Players are not allowed block or steal noodles from other players at any time.

The team with the most noodles in its hoop at the end of play wins!

12:30-1:00 Soul Survivor:

A Search for God and Self

Say: There are lots of people in the world who serve others. They feed the poor. They provide clothes for the needy. They include the outcast. They give money to charity. But why do they do it? Do they need to serve to survive? Some people do it because of guilt—they feel compelled to help others because their own health or success makes them feel guilty. Some people do it out of a sense of duty—it’s just something they have to do to be a good citizen. Some people do it to impress others—to make sure everybody else knows how kind and generous they are. Some people do it just to make themselves feel good—they like the sense of satisfaction they have after all their hard work. And, of course, some people don’t do it at all.

As Christians, we serve others as a way to serve God and feed our soul. It’s not to impress others, it’s not because of guilt or duty, and it shouldn’t be just to make ourselves feel good (because sometimes serving others doesn’t feel good). But when we focus on serving our Lord, we can do it. We can get the energy. We can find the motivation. We have a purpose. By feeding our soul with deeds and faith we will survive.

Ask:

·Is it easy or hard to live the service half of a life of a Christian? Explain.

·How can focusing on God motivate someone to serve, even when it’s really tough? Give examples.

·Why does God want us to serve others?

·What’s dangerous about living a life just focused on yourself?

In Real Life

Ask:

·Share a memory of a service project that you have participated in. (mission week, Caravan&ldots;)

·What should someone’s attitude be when serving?

·Someone who always is kind is more attractive than a self centered person. True or False. Explain.

·Have you ever tried to serve or help someone and had the person treat you rudely? Explain.

·As Christians, what should motivate us to serve other people, even when they don’t “deserve” it? Explain.

·Is being kind to others that really don’t deserve it required? Give an example.

·What about church dinners, are they service projects? Why should you help?

·What about other UMYF fundraisers, are they related to service?

·Is it okay to do as little as possible and still come to youth events? Explain.

1:00 – 2:00 Pizza

2:00 - 5:00 Survivor OUR Game

Keep the tribes:

Udaman

Megachi

Yiddymach

Flipadonya

Each tribe should select a torch bearer, and 3 snitches (A snitch must have a watch.)

Solve seven different clues in less than 10 minutes each, as a group. Retrieve your teams medallions and return for your next clue. Any tampering with other tribes medallions will result in disqualification.

The simple strategy, the first tribe to return to fellowship hall with all the correct answers and the least points deducted is the winner.

The torch bearer must always be in the lead, with a ball balanced on the unaltered spoon provided using just one hand. The ball may not be attached or fastened in any way and must be allowed to fall off the spoon if the torch bearer does not exercise caution in movement.  Each time the ball falls off the spoon 1 point is deducted.  Each step the torch bearer takes after the ball drops is one point deducted.  (Others may move to get the ball, but must then get behind the torch bearer to proceed.) Each step the torch bearer takes with others in front is one point deducted.

The snitches from the other tribes will tally and report all points deducted at the end of the game. They are also the time keepers.  After 10 minutes the tribe must use its Emergency Clue. The snitches will hold all opened Emergency Clues and return them at the end of the game with all other deductions.

When each tribe finds their correct clue, they all must return to Fellowship Hall and chant their tribe name 3 times to the sponsor(s) before continuing.  Sponsor(s) will hold the next clue until the previous clue is verified (by explanation). You may not just go looking for your medallions.

5:00 – 7:00 under ground church or Movie

If you want to do something a little less active watch the movie.

UNDERGROUND CHURCH has been a tradition for the youth of West Heights for many years.  By mixing this exciting game of tag-hide-and-go-seek-sardines-in-the-dark, a memorable experience should take place and with any luck each time they play it, from here on, it will have a deeper meaning.

The Game

Players are: Underground Church, Followers, or Guards.

There is one “Church” (a group of three).  The church is given a set amount of time to go and hide.  The Church will become the Guards for the next round.

There are “Guards” (number depends on the size of the “Church”).  The Guards try to keep the church from growing.  If a Guard tags a follower the Guard and the follower must go to the jail.  The follower must remain in jail until at least three others are caught.  After the third follower is caught and brought to jail the group of followers is free to leave the jail after the count of 50.

The “Followers” try to find the Underground Church without being tagged by the Guards or giving away where the Church is.  If a Guard finds the Church the round is over.  But, if the Church has 7 members it take 2 Guards to end the round.  If the church has 12 members it will take all three Guards to end the round.  Guards may not yell for other Guards, they must go and find them.  During the time the out numbered guards are away gathering together, the church may move to a new hiding place.  Once the church reaches 17 the round is over and the UNDERGROUND CHURCH has survived!
