Underground

7:00 - 10:00 Open Gym and Music

10:00 - 11:00 Under ground church

UNDERGROUND CHURCH has been a tradition for the youth of West Heights for many years.  By mixing this exciting game of tag-hide-and-go-seek-sardines-in-the-dark, a memorable experience should take place and with any luck each time they play it, from here on, it will have a deeper meaning.

The Game

Players are: Underground Church, Followers, or Guards.

There is one "Church" (a group of three).  The church is given a set amount of time to go and hide.  The Church will become the Guards for the next round.

There are "Guards" (number depends on the size of the "Church").  The Guards try to keep the church from growing.  If a Guard tags a follower the Guard and the follower must go to the jail.  To make it more interesting, have a random guard be a "close to conversion." If a Christian wants to get away from a guard, they witness to them, and the guard can, if they so choose, look the other way and let them go. The follower must remain in jail until at least three others are caught.  After the third follower is caught and brought to jail the group of followers is free to leave the jail after the count of 50.

Give each guard a pool noodle. If they whack you your caught.

The "Followers" try to find the Underground Church without being tagged by the Guards or giving away where the Church is.  If a Guard finds the Church the round is over.  But, if the Church has 7 members it take 2 Guards to end the round.  If the church has 12 members it will take all three Guards to end the round.  Guards may not yell for other Guards, they must go and find them.  During the time the out numbered guards are away gathering together, the church may move to a new hiding place.  Once the church reaches 17 the round is over and the UNDERGROUND CHURCH has survived!

11:00 - 11:30 The House of God

A Bible study while attending an infamous "lock-in" can be a perfect opportunity to encounter God.  So, as long as we have them captive, why not talk about some sacred places mentioned in the Bible?

Begin the session by asking these questions:

*What makes a place a 'House of God"?

*Can you think of times in your life when you have experienced God's presence in a place set aside for worship? If so, what happened?

*What are some ways we might mark a holy place today?

Read Genesis 28:10-22 (in groups or aloud). Then ask:

*What happened to Jacob, and why was this experience special to him?

*How did Jacob react to this experience?

*What did Jacob do to mark the place as a holy site?

*Why did Jacob call the place Bethel (the house of God)?

11:30-12:30 Under ground church

12:30-1:00 The Oaks of Mamre

Begin the session with these three questions:

*Can you think of a place where you have experienced the presence of God?

*Why, do you think, have human beings always mark certain spaces as holy or set apart for God?

*What makes a place special to us?

Read Genesis 18:1-15 (in groups or aloud). Then ask:

*Why, do you think, was Abraham sitting near the oaks?

*What event or announcement took place near the oaks of Mamre?

*How did Abraham react to this announcement? How did Sarah react?

*How did Abraham and Sarah experience the presence of God in this place?

*What did Abraham do to make the place memorable or special?

As small groups or as a whole solve the following riddle to find the first "Jail":

1:00 - 2:00 Pizza

2:00 - 3:00 Circle Games

 - Honey if you love me, Wink-um and such

Smile Toss

Players: Four to Twelve players

Players can sit in circle or through out the room as long as everyone can see each other. All players are to keep a straight somber face while one person that is chosen to be the Smile Tosser, smiles. The Smile Tosser will smile a big smile at all players trying to get them to crack a smile or laugh. If anyone smiles or laughs they are out of the game and they must be absolutely quiet while the game goes on. The Smile Tosser can wipe off his smile with his hand and throw it to another player if he wishes. The receiving player will put on the smile and be the new Smile Tosser. You can even set a time limit on how long your Smile Tosser is allowed to keep his role. Smile Toss is a great party game, holiday get together game, icebreaker game and youth group game.

Stations

Players: Small to medium groups

Everyone sits in a circle and is given a destination (name of a town) and in the middle, the station master stands with all the destination names on a card. He/She then chooses certain names; for example Bradford/Leeds. The two corresponding people then have to get up and exchange seats. In the meantime the station master has to try to jump into one of these seats. More than two destinations can be called out and the ultimate "All Change" when everyone has to change seats is a great laugh.

Can be played for hours and there is no ultimate winner or loser. Suitable for young and old. Can turn out rather rough, make sure that nothing breakable is nearby.

Someone Moved

Players: Small to large groups

Have all players sit in a circle and then chose a person to be "it". The "it" is to leave so that "it" cannot see or hear. Have one to four players move in the circle. When "it" returns he is to figure out who has moved in the circle. Great ice breaker for new groups!

Do You Love Your Neighbor?

Players: Small to medium groups

All players sit in a circle except one person who sits on someone's lap and asks, "Do you love your neighbor?" If he/she says YES, you all move one seat in any direction and the person that's IT try's to get a seat. If he/she does, then the person left standing is IT. However if he says NO then the IT asks, "Who do you love?" The person that was chosen then answers with a physical trait of other people in the circle (ex. glasses, shoes, hair color, and style of cloths) and those people move to any seat they can get except for there own.

3:00 - 3:30 The Prison

Begin the session with two questions:

*Can you think of a time when you felt out of control or lost?

*What was the worst experience that you have had? Why?

Read Genesis 39:19-40:23 (in groups or aloud). Then ask:

*While Joseph was in prison, how did he experience the blessing or support of God?

*What special help did God provide for Joseph?

*How did God use people to help Joseph?

*What gifts did Joseph have that might have helped him in his predicament?

*Because of this experience, what might Joseph have learned about God's presence?

*How was Joseph changed through this experience?

End the sessions by inviting the youth to find a spot to pray and to meditate on these Bible stories.  Or work together to mark a special spot and consecrate it to God, and close with a blessing or prayer at this location.
