About the event

Inadequate nutrition and safety are two primary reasons many people move into nursing homes. Like the rest of the population, seniors prefer to live in their own homes for as long as possible. Meals on Wheels delivers a hot, nutritious noon meal to home-bound people age 60 + each weekday. More than just a meal, the program provides a friendly, familiar face at the doors of home-bound people every day.  This important mission depends on servants delivering meals to our local seniors.  Would you like to help?Duties

1.  Deliver meals to home-bound seniors.

2.  Inform staff of any unusual circumstances involving the clients or routes.

3.  Let the WHUM Missions Program know when you served and the number of hours of service.

Requirements to Serve

1.  Complete an application.

2.  Participate in a brief orientation/training session and sign a criminal background affidavit and memorandum of understanding on agency policies.

3.  Follow agency policies.

4.  Have a valid Kansas Drivers License and use of a personal vehicle.

Delivering Meals

Once the above requirements are completed, you can deliver meals any weekday (M-F) on a regular basis (permanent route) or anytime it fits your schedule (substitute route: pick an open route).  Permanent routes can be delivered daily, once a week or once/twice a month.  Friday is when the most help is needed.  Routes are available in all areas of the city.  It takes approximately 1 hour to deliver a meal route, plus your time to get to/from the kitchen.  Meals are picked up at the Meals on Wheels kitchen at 200 S. Walnut St between 10:00-11:15am.  Staff members pack the meals in thermo-carriers to retain proper temperature, provide a route sheet with delivery instructions and a map of the delivery area.  To view the volunteer handbook, please click here.

Serving Together

You can make deliveries by yourself or with others that have completed the requirements.  This is a great opportunity to serve with others, whether it's friends, family members or groups like a work team or Sunday School class.

Next Steps

If you are interested in serving, please fill out the interest form below. A West Heights UMC member who regularly delivers meals will contact you, answer any questions you may have and see if you would like to ride with them to experience it first-hand.  When you're ready to serve, simply download a West Heights version of the application here, fill it out and mail it to Senior Services of Wichita, 200 S. Walnut, Wichita, KS 67213.  When your application is approved, Meals on Wheels will contact you to schedule a time for orientation at which time you will sign a criminal background affidavit and memorandum of understanding of agency policies.  If you would like talk directly with the Volunteer Coordinator at Meals on Wheels, please contact Tiffany Oltjenbruns at 267-0122 x211 or tiffanyo@seniorservicesofwichita.org.
